Illinois Governor Signs Marriage Equality Into Law
November 21, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Yesterday, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed marriage equality into law in the Land of Lincoln.
As a proud member of the Illinois Unites for Marriage coalition, HRC worked tirelessly for years to make this victory a reality.
“Sometimes we walk slowly, but we never walk back,” said Representative Greg Harris, lead sponsor of the bill, at yesterday’s signing event.
Both Rep. Harris and Sen. Heather Steans, the lead Senate sponsor, received standing ovations as they took the stage.
At the Chicago Gala Dinner last weekend, HRC honored Governor Quinn with the 2013 Equality Award for his role in this important step toward equality.
When marriage licenses become available on June 1, over 50 percent of Americans will live in a state with marriage equality.
While this is an incredible testament to the community’s progress, 34 states still prohibit loving and committing same-sex couples from marrying. To get involved in HRC’s work to bring equality everywhere, for everyone, visit our HRC Local page.
