Fighting for Those That Have Fought for Our Community
November 1, 2010 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director
While there are dozens of key federal elections tomorrow, there is one in the Senate and one in the House that have particular meaning for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community: In Nevada, the most powerful person in the Senate is also a strong supporter of LGBT community: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. As the leader of the Senate, Reid has fought hard to pass Hate Crimes legislation and pushed hard against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” In the House, Congressman Patrick Murphy is the lead sponsor of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal. He has made repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” a personal and professional priority. Both Reid and Murphy are fighting for their political careers, and HRC members have been working hard to get these men reelected. We must fight for those who have fought for us. While there will be many tea leaves to read on election night, it is absolutely clear that we need to reelect Harry Reid and Patrick Murphy.
