ENDA postcardsHRC is on the ground in the Great Lakes region. Continuing the momentum of last fall’s successes passing the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) through the U.S. Senate with bi-partisan support, Allison VanKuiken is leading the effort in Michigan to pass ENDA through the U.S. House of Representatives in this legislative session. This is the last hurdle before ENDA can go to the President’s desk to be signed and provide protection for all LGBT Americans against workplace discrimination. And one of our congressional priorities is in Michigan.

An overwhelming majority of Americans support workplace protections for LGBT people. Support is so widespread, in fact, that many believe these protections already exist across our nation. Unfortunately, gay and lesbian employees can still be fired just for being who they are in 29 states, and in 33 states for their gender identity and expression.

With as many successes as our movement has had nationally, such a basic protection for LGBT folks should be easy to support. Unfortunately, several key legislators in Michigan still aren’t on-board and we need their support if we’re going to push ENDA over the top. Allison will be working with a team of volunteer to secure the support from Cong. Miller (MI-10) that we need to pass ENDA. But she needs your help!

Our work is not possible without the help of volunteers like you! If you’d like to get involved, please contact Allison at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)  and she'll get you plugged in to the work happening in your area.

Allison VanKuiken is a political organizer and transgender activist currently working in Michigan on the Americans for Workplace Opportunity Campaign, a diverse, bipartisan effort to build support for the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Prior to working on the campaign, Allison most recently led the successful effort to protect the Royal Oak, Michigan nondiscrimination law at the ballot in 2013.  Allison calls the Detroit area home.
