On Wednesday New York University honored alumna Edith Windsor with the Presidential Medal at its 181st commencement ceremony held at Yankee Stadium.

The NYU Presidential Medal recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to their field or to other efforts, and to Windsor, the brave 83-year-old woman who is taking on the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act.

As he presented the award NYU President John Sexton said, "As the highest court in the land deliberates your case, Windsor v. the United States, you, our beloved graduate, are a moving testiment to the power and tenacity of this nation's evolving search for justice and equality."

Coincidentally, Windsor, a graduate student of NYU's class of 1957, received the award on the anniversary of the day Windsor legally married her longtime partner Thea Spyer.
