FROM THE HILL -- HRC AND MAJOR CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS PRESS FOR PASSAGE OF HISTORIC FEDERAL EQUALITY ACT: HRC, the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), the ACLU, the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) and the Center for American Progress (CAP) at a briefing yesterday announced that more than 230 representatives and 46 senators are expected to co-sponsor the Equality Act, reports The Hill’s Dorothy Mills-Gregg (@DMillsGregg). The historic measure, which would provide consistent and explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across key areas of life, will be reintroduced tomorrow by Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) and Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), and Cory Booker (D-N.J.). TODAY ON THE HILL - JoDee Winterhof, HRC’s senior vice president for policy and political affairs, will testify before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations (SFOPS) in support of the U.S. foreign aid budget's LGBTQ elements. “Congress has a crucial role to play in protecting human rights around the globe,” Winterhof said in prepared remarks. “Even as we push for the Equality Act to move toward a more perfect union, LGBTQ people worldwide face daily challenges to be who they are, safe from violence or death.”
