BETRAYING CHILDREN IN NEED, REPUBLICANS ON HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE ADOPT “LICENSE TO DISCRIMINATE” AMENDMENT: If it remains in the final bill, the amendment would grant a “license to discriminate” allowing child welfare placing agencies that receive federal government funding to turn away qualified prospective parents based on the agency’s religious beliefs. “Congress should be focusing on ways to help children in the child welfare system find homes rather than creating needless obstacles for prospective parents, effectively shrinking the pool of qualified folks who want to provide children with a loving home,” said David Stacy, HRC director of government affairs. LARGEST-EVER CONVENING OF PRESIDENTS OF HBCUs JOINED HRC TO DISCUSS EQUALITY ON CAMPUS: Said Mary Beth Maxwell, Senior Vice President for Programs, Training and Research for the HRC Foundation, “From enhanced inclusive programming to institutional investment in support staff, the momentum for equality at America’s HBCUs has never been clearer. KOCH BROTHERS TO SPEND ADDITIONAL $1 MILLION IN RACE TARGETING SEN. BALDWIN: Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) has been the top target of big money special interest groups this election cycle, who have already spent upwards of $10 million to oust her -- more than any other Democratic candidate up for re-election this year. Sen. Baldwin has been a pioneer in the fight for equality as a leader in the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a champion for federal hate crimes protections, and a primary sponsor of the Equality Act. HRC is on the ground mobilizing our thousands of members across the Badger state to turn out for equality in November.

THANKFUL THURSDAY -- MADISON (WISC.) CITY COUNCIL PASSES MEASURE TO PROTECT YOUTH FROM “CONVERSION THERAPY”:  It’s the second city in the state to pass such a measure; Milwaukee embraced similar protections for minors in March. “No child should be subjected to abuse -- and that’s exactly what this dangerous, discredited practice of so-called ‘conversion therapy’ really is,” said HRC Wisconsin State Director Wendy Strout. HEARTBREAKING STORY OF TRANSGENDER SALVADORAN WHO FEARS SEEKING ASYLUM IN THE U.S.: “I’ve gone up to the border many times and turned back,” said Jade Quintanilla, who has escaped violence in El Salvador but fears entering the U.S. because of the Trump-Pence administration’s attacks on immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. “What if they ask, ‘Why would we accept a person like you in our country?’ I think about that a lot. It would be like putting a bullet to my head, if I arrive and they say no.” More from Jose A. Del Real (@jdelreal) in The New York Times.

HRC RELEASES NEW “COMING HOME” FAITH GUIDE FOR LGBTQ EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS: While recent surveys show that 53 percent of young white evangelical Protestants support marriage equality, many older members of that faith group are still struggling with accepting LGBTQ people -- including the LGBTQ faithful worshiping among them. “Within evangelical churches, many LGBTQ people, their loved ones and their allies are putting in the important work to create a safe and welcoming place to practice their religion. HRC is proud to release this powerful guide as part of our ongoing effort to help faith leaders and organizers fully embrace the LGBTQ faithful,” said Lisbeth Melendez Rivera, HRC Foundation director of faith outreach and training.
