VIRGINIA LGBTQ CIVIL RIGHTS BILL COULD BE BLUEPRINT FOR LGBTQ PROTECTIONS IN THE SOUTH: Last Thursday, the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates approved a landmark bill that would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of protected classes in areas including housing, employment and public accommodation. “When I first got here, we had people who were hostile to LGBTQ people, then we had people who were personally very welcoming,” said Virginia State Senator Adam Ebbin (@AdamEbbin). “Now we’ve gotten to the point where people not only have relationships with LGBTQ people, but they know it’s the right thing to do. They don’t want to be left behind by history.” More from Nico Lang (@Nico_Lang) at Vox.
Virginia is charting a course for other states to follow. This progress is testament to the power of elections and the need for all LGBTQ people and our allies to mobilize, organize and VOTE. https://t.co/JOkVA1S1XS— Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid) February 12, 2020

NEW REPUBLIC REPORTS ON THE ONGOING LEGISLATIVE ATTACKS ON TRANS YOUTH ACROSS COUNTRY: While H.B. 1057, a bill that would have criminalized doctors for providing trans-affirming health care to trans youth, failed in a South Dakota Senate Committee, eight other states have filed version of the same legislation. “We’re seeing that some of these bills have marginally different pieces—be it in the language of the law or the enforcement mechanisms,” said HRC’s Nick Morrow (@NRMorrow), describing it as a “spaghetti at the wall” approach to see what type of anti-LGBTQ legislation sticks.
