HRC PRESIDENT ALPHONSO DAVID WRITES FOR THE HILL AFTER LAST WEEK’S TITLE VII SUPREME COURT DECISION -- “THE FIGHT ISN’T OVER”: So as we celebrate and recognize [last] Monday’s critical step towards full equality, we know that there is still more work to be done -- from racial justice to economic justice to protecting our democracy from ruin,” writes David (@AlphonsoDavid). “Our nation is at a reckoning. For true and sustainable change, we must continue our shared fight for a future free of discrimination, one in which all of our lives are viewed as equal and every single person is able to thrive. We must push for the passage and signing of the Equality Act. For our democracy to function for all and for marginalized communities to be afforded with the dignity we deserve, our next step forward is clear: we must defeat Donald Trump and his anti-equality enablers in November.” Read the full op-ed at The Hill.
HRC CONDEMNS TRUMP’S WELCOME OF ANTI-LGBTQ LEADER TO WHITE HOUSE: “Polish President Andrzej Duda’s visit to the White House on the eve of Poland’s upcoming presidential election is a clear and unambiguous attempt to leverage Trump’s anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in the Polish elections,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “Rather than offering up effective solutions to the challenges facing Poland, especially during the global COVID-19 crisis, Duda is attempting to shore up his base by running on a virulently anti-LGBTQ platform. By supporting Duda in advancing an anti-LGBTQ platform, President Trump, once again, shows that he is no friend to the LGBTQ community – in the U.S. or abroad. And we will hold him accountable this November.” In addition to his recent dehumanizing and absurd declaration that LGBTQ rights are an “ideology” more harmful than communism, Duda and his ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party have pledged to ban marriage equality, prevent same-sex couples from adopting children and ban education on LGBTQ issues. They have also been silent while so-called “LGBT-free zones” have been declared in cities and regions all across Poland. Read more from HRC.
HRC WRAPS UP RECORD-BREAKING HRC GIVES BACK DIGITAL CAMPAIGN: The campaign was designed to raise funds for the critical fight for LGBTQ rights while benefitting essential workers and a wide variety of community organizations. In total, HRC distributed more than 22,000 masks to partner organizations in need and received 11,000 membership contributions. “We are living in unprecedented times, and the overwhelming success of HRC Gives Back is an especially heartening development showing that people continue to understand the critical importance of fighting for LGBTQ rights while giving back to those on the front lines,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “We are grateful to members and supporters for making this important initiative successful.” Read more from HRC.
HRC ON REPUBLICAN ATTACKS ON LGBTQ KIDS IN KANSAS: Last week, all three leading contenders for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Kansas released advertisements demonizing and dehumanizing transgender children. Said HRC National Campaign Director Geoff Wetrosky (@gwetrosky), “Kobach, Marshall and Hamilton are clearly in a race to the bottom trying to scapegoat vulnerable people to win a contentious primary vote. The ads by their campaigns attacking transgender kids and LGBTQ people are cruel and completely out of step with Kansan and American values. Kansas voters overwhelmingly support equality -- with over 72% of Kansans supporting LGBTQ non-discrimination protections -- and will reject the Kobach-Marshall-Hamilton politics of extremism.”
A BRIEF PRIDE SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR BLACK AND BROWN LGBTQ FOLKS: “Many queer and trans people of color experience alienation from Pride events that do not reflect or honor the true diversity of our community. That’s why dozens of Black, Latinx, Asian and other affinity Prides were created throughout the country,” writes Deanna Richards. “Although many mainstream Prides have moved into digital spaces this year, many affinity Prides have been outright canceled in response to COVID-19. Many QTPOC who turn to affinity Prides as a source of joy and resilience now have fewer outlets than in recent years. That is why it is especially important to find ways to connect to the remaining affinity Pride events and to find other empowering ways to celebrate all of our identities this Pride season to help counteract the impact of social isolation made necessary by COVID-19.” See Richards’ strategies that QTPOC can utilize during this Pride month here.
