Good morning and thanks for tuning in to Equally Speaking, your morning dose of LGBT news from the Human Rights Campaign for Monday, June 1st. I’m Sultan Shakir.
And I’m Alison Delpercio. Leading off, incredible news from Nevada.
Breaking news last night from Nevada - both houses of the state’s legislature overrode Governor Jim Gibbons’ veto of domestic partnerships in the state. It will become law in the next few months. For more on the bill, read our blog at HRCBackStory.org.
Disappointing news from Illinois over the weekend, but hope remains. The Senate had passed a civil union bill last week in the waning hours of the session, but the House adjourned without taking up the issue. However, the chamber may come back in the next few weeks for a summer special session, giving the bill some hope.
A New Hampshire House and Senate conference committee reached an agreement on the marriage equality bill over the weekend. The final vote is now set for this Wednesday. Log on to New Hampshire Freedom to Marry to take action and RSVP for the vote day event at NHFTM.org.
In blog news, today is the annual Blogging for LGBT Families Day. Log on to Mombian.com to read contributed posts, including one from Ellen Kahn, HRC’s family project director.
Finally, this weekend was the Meet in the Middle event in Fresno, Calif., where activists gathered to chart strategy going forward. Photos and videos of the event are at MeetInTheMiddle4Equality.org.
That’s the news from us today – thanks for tuning in.
Have a great day and we’ll see you back here again tomorrow morning.
