Opposition Watch

The right wing extremists are vigorously mobilizing their forces on behalf of the Federal Marriage Amendment.

They have pledged to send millions of postcards flooding Senate offices with messages of support for the FMA and have claimed to organize coalitions including America's "most prominent religious leaders" and "liberal allies."

Fair-minded supporters of equality must redouble our efforts to communicate to our elected officials our opposition to writing discrimination into the U.S. Constitution!

What the Other Side is Saying

The FMA Supporters are Mobilized and Energized

We are engaged in a full-court press to make sure that we have passage of the Marriage Protection Amendment this year by the United States Senate and House of Representatives.  Part of that is to mobilize pastors throughout the country to encourage our elected representatives to vote for passage of the amendment.

– Barrett Duke
Vice-President for Public Policy
Southern Baptist Convention

We need your help to flood the offices of each U.S. senator with phone calls, letters and postcards that demonstrate the importance of preserving marriage as the union of a man and a woman and urge the senators to support the amendment. We'll be partnering with the Family Research Council, the Arlington Group, the Southern Baptist Convention, Anglican and Lutheran churches and many Catholic Bishops with assistance from the Knights of Columbus to send more than a million postcards to the Senate.

I think that there's a far better chance there's going to be an amendment to the Constitution than many of the people in this room and than many of the people on editorial boards across the country.

– Dr. Richard Land

If you stand against marriage between one man and one woman, it's going to cost you politically.

What FMA Supporters Think of GLBT Americans, Couples, and Families

Those who are seeking to redefine marriage out of existence are not just seeking tolerance "to do their thing." They will not stop with marriage. Their next step is to proselytize your very young children for homosexuality and they don't think you should have any say.

– Tony Perkins
Family Research Council
Washington Update, April 21, 2006

Gay marriage is not the wave of the future but the end of society as we know it.

– Sandy Rios
President
Concerned Women for America

For more than 40 years, the homosexual activist movement has sought to implement a master plan that has had as its centerpiece the utter destruction of the family. The institution of marriage, along with an often weakened and impotent Church, is all that stands in the way of its achievement of every coveted aspiration.

– Dr. James Dobson

I would argue that the future of our country hangs in the balance because the future of marriage hangs in the balance. Isn't that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?
