Justice Roberts

Résumé

You'd want him for your lawyer, but do you want him as your judge?

JOHN G. ROBERTS, JR.

OBJECTIVE:
Lifetime confirmation to serve on closely divided Supreme Court. Replace moderate justice and share role as final interpreter of American rights and liberties.

Post it note that reads: Joe was right. He seems to believe judges should stand by even when laws violate an individual's civil rights.EXPERIENCE:

Judge, DC Circuit Court of Appeals 2003-present

  • Held that the arrest and detention of a twelve-year-old girl who ate one french fry while riding public transportation did not violate her civil rights.
    • Finds this situation unfortunate, but says judges should not help.
  • Wrote that an environmental-protection law was unconstitutional, advancing a judicial philosophy that threatens Congress' power to pass hate-crimes laws and protect a variety of Americans through legislation.

Private Attorney, Hogan and Hartson (1993-2003)

  • Argued that the Americans with Disabilities Act did not protect a woman injured by her work on the job.
  • Provided a few hours of pro bono legal assistance in major gay rights case. but didn't list it on his confirmation brag sheet.

Deputy Solicitor General, Bush I Administration (1989-1993)

  • Argued for school-sponsored prayers at graduation ceremonies.
  • UNKNOWN: The current Bush administration may view all records from this time, but refuses to grant full access to the Senate or American public.

Assistant White House Counsel/Attorney General, Reagan Administration (1981-1986)

  • In response to Republican lawmakers' request for support to end gender-based wage discrimination, Roberts criticized federal court rulings requiring equal pay for equal work as "radical redistributive concept[s]."
  • Would have prevented judges from hearing cases on reproductive choice, school prayer, and school desegregation efforts.
  • Mocked the "so-called" right to privacy.
    • Argued that the United States Constitution does not protect women from bearing children against their will.
  • UNKNOWN: Roberts addressed the federal government's ability to revoke tax-exempt status from schools that ban interracial dating. The documents are withheld so his position is unclear-as are reasons behind Bush officials' secrecy.

Extra-curricular Activities

  • Advised Jeb Bush in 2000 Florida presidential election recount
  • Role playing justices like Justice Scalia
