Justice Roberts

Justice John Roberts' Nomination

On July 19th, President George W. Bush nominated Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court. Justice John Roberts's record, both as Deputy Solicitor General and on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, raises serious concerns about whether he should be elevated to the Supreme Court. Roberts has shown a hostility to women's reproductive freedom, and he has taken positions that would undermine religious liberty and free speech. His experience as a judge is limited, but what little record he has on the bench raises troubling questions about his ideology and judicial philosophy. The Senate voted to confirm Roberts by 78 to 22. Roberts was sworn in as the 17th Chief Justice of the United States on September 29.
