HRC's Work on Judicial NominationsThe Human Rights Campaign has taken a leading role in representing the GLBT community in the judicial nomination process. HRC urges the president to nominate fair-minded judges who will safeguard the rights and liberties of all Americans. Moreover, HRC lobbies senators to oppose those nominees whose commitment to upholding the principles of equality and fairness is questionable.
HRC works with a variety of other important allies on judicial nominations issues through the Coalition for a Fair and Independent Judiciary. The coalition (which includes groups such as the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, People for the American Way, the Sierra Club, Earth Justice, the Alliance for Justice, the National Council of Jewish Women, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the National Women's Law Center) functions to permit groups to share information on the legal records and qualifications of various nominations and to facilitate coordinated advocacy efforts, where such efforts are appropriate. President George W. Bush has nominated over 200 judges to the federal court system. HRC has been very measured in its approach to these nominees, opposing only seven nominees. |
