Human Rights Campaign fights for LGBT equality in North Carolina alongside state and local groups and lawmakers.

Thank you for supporting our work in North Carolina and the HRC North Carolina Families PAC.

On May 8th, North Carolina's discriminatory and overreaching Amendment One passed, banning marriage and other forms of relationship recognition for gays and lesbians. While disheartening, this is a temporary setback in the movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality - a movement that has seen and is continuing to see tremendous progress and growing support across the country.

Support for constitutional amendments banning committed, loving same-sex couples from marrying has been dropping over the years as support for marriage equality continues to rise nationwide. In 2004 similar amendments passed on average 71 percent to 29 percent. In 2008, the margin shrank to 57 percent to 43 percent. HRC is proud to have been a founding member of the Coalition to Protect All NC Families and applauds all of the member organizations' efforts against Amendment One. HRC had staff on the ground for months leading a robust field, campus and faith outreach effort. In cash and in-kind contributions including staff resources and funds raised through the HRC North Carolina Families PAC, HRC's commitment to the campaign against Amendment One was nearly $500,000.

A constitutional ban on marriage will appear on this year's November ballot in Minnesota. Voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington will decide pro-marriage equality initiatives. HRC has set up special funds in each of these states to help win.
