Ryan Wilson

Ryan Wilson serves as the Senior Regional Field Organizer for the Southern United States. He is responsible for strengthening strategic partnerships and building diverse coalitions in addition to mobilizing communities, in an effort to advance equality across the South.

Before joining HRC, Ryan served as Executive Director for South Carolina Equality. There, he was instrumental with introducing a bill to amend South Carolina’s state employment laws to add protections for LGBT workers known as “The Workplace Fairness Act”. In addition to managing legislative efforts at the South Carolina State House, Wilson led municipal equality efforts in the City of Columbia and Charleston County as well as participated in the passing of a sweeping human rights ordinance in Myrtle Beach.

Ryan has been active in the work of HRC since 2007, as a summer intern in Washington, DC and as a volunteer member of the HRC Carolinas Gala planning committees in 2007 and 2008. Ryan’s history of volunteering in his local community includes roles as the former president of board for both South Carolina Pride Movement and the Harriet Hancock LGBT Center.  In addition to LGBT equality efforts, Ryan also has worked in various roles related to reproductive justice, HIV prevention, and sexual health education.

Ryan was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He studied Architecture at Clemson University and received a Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina. After college he participated in the Riley Institute’s Diversity Leadership Program through Furman University.

Ryan and his partner of six years Shehan were married in Maryland in 2013 and enjoy traveling the country when they can get away from their home in Columbia, SC.
