Peter Cruz

Associate Director of HIV & Health Equity

Peter Cruz serves as associate director of HRC's HIV and Health Equity program, and has been working in HIV services since 2003. Prior to joining the HRC family, Peter served as the Associate Director at APAIT (Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team), an HIV service organization based in Los Angeles. As Associate Director, Peter managed APAIT’s HIV testing, prevention, housing and ancillary services for individuals living with and affected by HIV. In addition to his programmatic work, Peter also has extensive experience in community mobilization and advocacy.

In 2016, Peter led APAIT's efforts in organizing #NotOurPride, a coalition of LGBTQ groups and individuals who spoke out against controversial changes that were planned for that year’s LA Pride Festival by event organizer, Christopher Street West (CSW). As a result of #NotOurPride’s advocacy, the proposed changes were rescinded by CSW and approximately 17,000 LGBTQ individuals and allies were offered free admission to that year’s Friday night festivities. #NotOurPride received coverage from several media outlets including the Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post, USA Today, Gay Star News, and LA Weekly.

In June 2017, Peter had the honor of being the first person to speak at the Resist March, a historic LGBTQ rights march in Los Angeles and West Hollywood which drew an estimated crowd of 100,000 people.
Additionally, Peter played an integral role in the development and implementation of the Midnight Stroll, a monthly outreach event targeting homeless LGBTQ individuals and trans sex workers in the Hollywood area. The Midnight Stroll was established through a partnership between APAIT, The Wall Las Memorias, the Los Angeles Transgender Advisory Council, the Los Angeles Police Department,
and the office of Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell. The Midnight Stroll received coverage from the Los Angeles Times and The Advocate Magazine.

Peter is steadfast in his commitment to be of service to the LGBTQ community and is honored to be a member of the Human Rights Campaign family.
