Director of Research and Public Education

As Director of Research and Public Education, Jay Brown is charged with shaping the organization's approach to generating research and educational campaigns aimed at enhancing the lives of LGBT people. He works closely with the Chief Foundation Officer and Foundation program staff to plan and develop reports, issue briefs, toolkits and other resources focusing on a range of issues, including healthcare, religion and faith, the workplace, education, foster care and adoption, youth and families -- as well as transgender equity, HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness, and racial justice. This includes managing the release of new data, developing long-term messaging guidance, and integrating programmatic work with other organizational priorities.

From 2013-2015, Jay served as HRC's Director of Foundation Program Strategies, where he focused on increasing the visibility and reach of the Foundation's work. Prior to that role, he held director positions at Reading Is Fundamental and Carnegie Mellon University, focusing on integrated marketing and online communications. Jay also worked at the Human Rights Campaign from 2000 to 2006, where he advanced messages of fairness for LGBT people in the media. His work included managing communications strategies around the defeat of the Federal Marriage Amendment, repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and advancing the equality of transgender people.

An out trans man, Jay lives in Maryland with his spouse, Kendra, and their two children.
