Lawrence King
Lawrence King, a 15 year old junior high student in Oxnard, CA, was shot and killed on school grounds on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, by fellow student Brandon McInerney, age 14. King, who self-identified as gay, had recently been harassed at school by students, including McInerney, for having painted nails and wearing feminine accessories. Following the shooting, King was rushed to the hospital where they believed his condition to be critical, but improving. King was later announced brain dead and on February 14th, he was removed from life support and his organs were donated. McInerney has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder as well as a hate crime.
