While Charles left an indelible mark on American fashion, his commitment to his political ideas is equally notable. In 2003, Charles left his position as head designer of Anne Klein to volunteer for presidential hopeful Howard Dean, and was an outspoken supporter for Barack Obama during his 2008 election.

"It is heartbreaking to learn of the passing of not only a staunch advocate, but a dear friend," said HRC President Joe Solmonese. "Each of us here expresses our deepest condolences to Charles' partner Andy, and their entire family."

Funeral services will be held Wednesday. Charles Nolan is survived by his partner of 16 years, Andrew Tobias, and a large extended family.
