United Church of Christ Marriage Resolution Demonstrates Leadership on Equality and Understanding

by Admin •

'Fair-minded people of faith have come to depend on the UCC for leadership on equality,' said HRC President Joe Solmonese.

WASHINGTON - The General Synod of the 1.3 million member United Church of Christ will consider a resolution endorsing marriage equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples at its biennial meeting in Atlanta which begins July 1 and lasts through July 5. Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese made the following statement today:

"Fair-minded people of faith have come to depend on the UCC for leadership on equality. For years, the United Church of Christ has been at the forefront of leadership on GLBT rights. We applaud the denomination's members and leaders for their thoughtful dialogue as they have considered the marriage resolution in preparation for General Synod. While some denominations work to shut down the national conversation on challenges facing gay families, UCC congregations and regional bodies have lovingly discussed the needs of these families, whom they embrace as sisters and brothers. The head of the UCC - Reverend Thomas - spoke out in favor of the resolution yesterday and sent a strong message to millions of people of faith that every loving family should valued and cherished. The formal debate and vote on marriage equality at the General Synod offer another opportunity for the UCC to lead on GLBT equality."

The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender political organization with members throughout the country. It effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to ensure that LGBT Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.
