ABC News/Washington Post

A record number of Americans support civil unions, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Overall, 55 percent favor allowing gays and lesbians to form legally recognized civil unions, giving them all the same rights as married couples in areas such as health insurance, inheritance, and pension coverage, according the study. That's up from 45 percent in a 2006 ABC News/Washington Post poll.
