Senator Jeffords: A Strong Advocate for Equality

by HRC Staff •

'Senator Jeffords has been a strong advocate for equality and will truly be missed,' said HRC President Joe Solmonese.

WASHINGTON - Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese made the following statement recognizing the valuable contributions of Sen. Jim Jeffords, I-Vt., to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans as the senator announced today that he would not be seeking re-election:

&quotSenator Jeffords has been a strong advocate for equality and will truly be missed. Through the years, the senator has stood on the side of fairness for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans. From his work leading the charge to fight employment discrimination, to being a driving force on the Ryan White CARE Act, to his efforts to reform pension plans for equitable treatment, to his own office policy protecting GLBT employees, Senator Jeffords is a strong and independent voice in the fight for equal rights.

&quotAs the senator moves on to the next stage in life, we know he will continue to make a positive impact on the country. On behalf of the Human Rights Campaign and our 600,000 members, thank you, Senator.&quot
