North Carolina Gov McCrory Vetoes Needless, Mean-Spirited Bill

WASHINGTON – Today, Republican North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory vetoed SB 2 - an unnecessary bill that would have sent the wrong message about the state by allowing “magistrates, assistant registers of deeds, and deputy registers of deeds to recuse themselves from performing duties related to marriage ceremonies due to sincerely held religious objections.”

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, applauded Gov. McCrory for stopping the mean-spirited legislation.

"We're pleased to see that the governor vetoed this needless and unfortunate legislation,” said HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse. “Officials who swear an oath to serve the public should serve the whole public without reservation. We believe the governor's veto should be the last word on this bill, which does nothing to serve the interests of the people of North Carolina."

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. HRC envisions a world where LGBT people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
