HRC Lauds Sen. John McCain’s Steadfast Opposition to Amendment
'We salute Senator McCain's ironclad opposition to putting discrimination in the Constitution,' said HRC President Cheryl Jacques.
WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign today lauded Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for his steadfast opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment, including his announcement Tuesday that he would oppose Wednesday's procedural "cloture" vote in addition to a vote on the substance. HRC President Cheryl Jacques made the following statement lauding Sen. McCain:
"We salute Senator McCain's ironclad opposition to undermining the Constitution. Instead of dividing the country, all senators should follow Senator McCain's example.
"The American people see a vote for cloture as a vote for the Federal Marriage Amendment. Senator McCain recognizes this and we hope others will too."
The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender political organization with members throughout the country. It effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to ensure that LGBT Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.
