HRC Calls Brewer Campaign Accusations &quotThe Worst Politics Has to Offer&quot

Top political advisor to Arizona Governor engages in outrageous gay-baiting

Washington - Yesterday, one of Jan Brewer's top political advisors responded to an interview question regarding the Governor's medical records by suggesting the reporter ask Attorney General Terry Goddard take a lie detector test asking if he'd ever slept with a man. It was the second time the aide, Chuck Coughlin, brought up the subject during the interview. Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese issued the following statement:

"The outrageous rhetoric being spewed by Jan Brewer's campaign speculating about Attorney General Goddard's sexual orientation is the worst politics has to offer. Given the recent news of LGBT related suicides across the country, this toxic political environment only serves to fuel the fire of hatred and homophobia. Our youth deserve an honest debate on the issues that matter to their future, not a grown up bully hell-bent on character assassination."

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
