HRC Announces Endorsement of Pat Murphy for Congress

by HRC Staff

WASHINGTON– Today, the fifth anniversary of marriage equality in Iowa, the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – announced the endorsement of State Rep. Pat Murphy for election to the U.S. House in Iowa’s 1st district. Murphy has a stellar record on LGBT equality and has been steadfast in his support of marriage equality and commitment to Iowa’s LGBT residents.

“In his time in the State House, Pat Murphy has not only been a supporter of LGBT equality, he has been a leader in the fight,” said Tom O’Donnell, HRC Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “When the Iowa Supreme Court made its historic decision on marriage equality five years ago, Pat Murphy publicly celebrated the Court’s decision and has never looked back.  He stands with the LGBT community and will take that support to Washington.”

"The endorsement from the Human Rights Campaign means so much to me, especially on the 5th anniversary of marriage equality in Iowa,” said state Rep. Pat Murphy.  “I'm proud of my record of standing for equality in Iowa and will continue to stand with advocates for equality, like HRC, in Congress.”

Murphy is a strong supporter of LGBT equality, including marriage equality. Murphy led the House chamber’s passage of a statewide non-discrimination law in 2007.  When Iowa’s Supreme Court approved marriage equality in 2009, Murphy immediately hailed the decision as other officeholders waffled. While House Speaker, Murphy was a vital force in keeping the chamber from attempts to amend the state’s Constitution to reverse the marriage decision.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

Paid for by the Human Rights Campaign political action committee and authorized by Pat Murphy for Iowa.
