HRC Announces Endorsement of Janice Hahn for Congress

7/6/2011

Washington– Today the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – announced the endorsement of Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn running for the U.S. House in California’s 36th district.  Hahn has a stellar record on LGBT equality in contrast to her Republican opponent Craig Huey who has said “marriage equality is just the first step towards legalized incest and pedophilia” and has called on Christians to “free those who are trapped in homosexual bondage.”

“Janice Hahn is a proven leader who will be an amazing advocate for equality in Congress,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “She will stand up for all Americans and ensure that all of her constituents are accepted and welcomed as part of the American family.”

“I am honored to have the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign," said Councilwoman Hahn.   “If I go to Washington, I will do everything I can to repeal the discriminatory DOMA. I believe marriage equality is about civil rights; it's about whether we are going to have a just society, or whether we're going to continue to make people second-class citizens because of who they love. I am proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with LGBT Americans in the fight for equality, respect and dignity for all.”

Hahn is a strident supporter of LGBT equality. She aggressively opposed Prop. 8, voting to make marriage equality the official position of the City of Los Angeles. She also voted to support federal legislation prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, and to support federal assistance to local governments to vigorously prosecute hate crimes.

“We need Janice’s energy and courage in Congress fighting to repeal the so-called ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ and to advance the banner of equality in California and the country as a whole.  We can’t let Craig Huey’s extremism reach Washington,” added Solmonese.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

Paid for by the Human Rights Campaign PAC and not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee.
