Domestic Partnership Bill Approved by New Mexico House

WASHINGTON-The New Mexico House of Representatives has approved a bill that offers unmarried couples-same- or opposite-sex-the same rights and benefits granted to married couples under state law. The Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act passed by a margin of 33 to 31. The domestic partnership legislation now moves to the state Senate, where similar legislation failed by just one vote last year. The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender advocacy group, has been on the ground in New Mexico building support for the legislation for several weeks.

"We applaud the New Mexico State House for siding with equality and passing the domestic partnership bill," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "We now look to the New Mexico State Senate to pass this bill and help provide these critically important benefits to the thousands of unmarried couples, both gay and straight."

HRC is part of a coalition supporting the Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act. The coalition, organized by Equality New Mexico, also includes the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and other groups.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against GLBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
