WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese made the following statement as Canada's House of Commons passed legislation yesterday that extends marriage rights to same-sex couples. The measure now heads to the Senate.

&quotWith marriage equality a reality in much of Canada, it's life as usual to for our neighbors up north. This vote marks a significant sign that the opponents' premonitions were wrong marriage has been good for all Canadians.

&quotAs the nation stands to become the third country to legalize marriage for same-sex couples, the world is beginning to understand the importance of extending equality to all families. As made clear in the legislation, no churches or house of worship will ever have to perform marriages for same-sex couples. This vote is about legal rights and responsibilities that should no longer be denied to hard-working families.

&quotAmericans should look at the fair way in which Canada is treating its citizens and know that no harm is coming to anybody as a result. This is about basic fairness.&quot
