WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese made the following statement as Canada's House of Commons passed legislation yesterday that extends marriage rights to same-sex couples. The measure now heads to the Senate.

&quotCanada is a beacon to the world on making sure that all families are protected by the same rights and responsibilities. This is a historic vote on the most basic values of equal rights and responsibilities for every family.

&quotWith marriage equality a reality in much of Canada, it's life as usual to for our neighbors up north. This vote marks a significant sign that the opponents' premonitions were wrong marriage has been good for all Canadians.

&quotAs the nation stands to become the third country to legalize marriage for same-sex couples, the world is beginning to understand the importance of extending equality to all families. As made clear in the legislation, no churches or house of worship will ever have to perform marriages for same-sex couples.
