The Rise and Fall of the National Organization for Marriage

NY’s 23rd: HRC Urges a Vote for Bill Owens

November 02, 2009

The following is from an alert that was sent today to our members in New York’s 23rd Congressional District where a special election tomorrow will fill a seat held by Rep. John McHugh.  Ben Smith at Politico has more. This past Saturday, unfortunately, HRC’s endorsee, Dede Scozzafava, effectively ended her campaign. Though her name will still appear on the ballot, Dede has endorsed Democrat Bill Owens. We, too, urge you to vote for Bill Owens. While Owens’ positions on issues of equality are not as strong as we’d like (he does support civil unions and revisiting the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy), Conservative Doug Hoffman has proven himself a staunch opponent of every issue HRC advocates. Ultra-conservative Doug Hoffman strongly opposes equal marriage rights for same-sex couples, and proudly touts his discriminatory views on his website. His anti-LGBT views and opposition to a woman’s right to choose have attracted support from many of the zealots that work against HRC every day. Right-winger Doug Hoffman’s endorsers include:
  • Former Senator Rick Santorum
  • The Family Research Council
  • National Organization for Marriage, chief proponents of Prop. 8 in California
  • The Eagle Forum, headed by Phyllis Shlafly
  • Jim Dobson of Focus on the Family
  • Sarah Palin, Dick Armey, Steve Forbes, Fred Thompson
  • Many more fringe, ultra-conservative groups

HRC feels it is important to stand against these strong forces of bigotry, and to defeat anti-LGBT Doug Hoffman. We strongly encourage you to vote for Bill Owens, Democrat for U.S. Congress tomorrow, Tuesday, November 3.

Paid for by the Human Rights Campaign PAC ( and not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.
