Attack Update: Jan. 26, 2006 The attack: “We need somebody to put rat poisoning in Justice Stevens’ crème brûlée. That’s just a joke, for you in the media.” Significance: This is a particularly striking example of the right-wing campaign against judges. It is not clear what Coulter thinks is funny about poisoning a Supreme Court justice. It is clear that this is part of an ongoing effort to denigrate and marginalize the judiciary and judges condemned as “activist” (usually meaning judges who think that constitutional rights apply equally to all Americans).
