How Civil Rights Decisions Affect My Education Experience

By: Jason Bednarski

Civil rights decisions affect our lives greatly every day. They may determine how we think, what we do, or how we do it. More importantly, civil rights decisions affect my educational experience as a student. While in school they will, in many ways, affect the way I learn and think. Civil rights decisions may also have a huge impact on the curriculum I am taught and how the material is presented to me as a student. One of the biggest roles of civil rights decisions in my educational experience is that there is no discrimination against anyone on the basis of race, color, national origin, disability, sex, or religion. This has a huge impact on my education in a positive way. When I get to know all of these people who are different from me, I begin learning about different ethnic backgrounds and cultures. I gain a better understanding of different religions, beliefs, traditions, and even regions of the world. This has a great impact on my educational experience because it gives me an upfront perspective of many different cultures other than my own.

Another great part of civil rights is that they allow you to express yourself freely without any consequences, for the most part. If the government did not allow anyone to express themselves freely life would be very plain and simple. No one’s great ideas or talents would ever be acknowledged. We would all, most likely, wear the same clothes, think the same, and have the same personality traits or characteristics. There would be no art, music, or lectures because these are all different forms of creativity people use to express themselves.

Two of the major parts of freely expressing myself is the freedom of speech and the right to have beliefs other than those of the government. These two components are very important to my educational experience, especially while learning about politics and the way our nation’s government works. Not everyone has the same opinion or perspective on our government or politicians. For the most part, this is a positive thing when it comes to discussing the government because when two people have different opinions they can learn from one another and understand the other person’s perspective. Without freedom of speech we would rarely be able to express our own thoughts and opinions. A great part of learning is being able to get an insight and understanding of another person’s perspectives and ideas. At a glance it may seem that civil rights decisions have little or nothing to do with my educational experience as a student. However, after examining what civil rights really are, I learned that civil rights basically determine much of what my education is about. They help give me an insight into cultures other than my own. They also let me freely express myself. That is why civil rights decisions are so important to my educational experience.
