Good morning and thanks for tuning in to Equally Speaking, your morning dose of GLBT news from the Human Rights Campaign for Wednesday, December 19th. I’m Janice Hughes.
And I’m Sultan Shakir. First up, a transgender student has been denied campus housing in Utah.
A transgender student in Southern Utah University says he was denied campus housing due to his gender identity and expression. Kourt Osborn fully disclosed his gender identity in his housing application. He was then denied housing in both the women’s and men’s campus dormitories.
The last of six public hearings over same-sex marriage in Vermont took place last night. The Vermont Commission on Family Recognition and Protection met at the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier. The group will now review its notes and report back to the full legislature in April of next year.
GLB individuals constitute nearly one-third of New York City’s homeless youth, according to a recent census. The tally was conducted in July and surveyed roughly 1,000 youth who were either homeless or at risk for homelessness.
According to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive, lesbians tend to have higher stress levels during the holidays than heterosexual women. Additionally, 51% of lesbians said they tend to feel more depressed around the holidays, compared to just 36% of heterosexual women.
A recent analysis released by the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation shows that same-sex couples in the D.C. area often earn less than married men and women. According to the data, married heterosexual couples trump same-sex couples in nine of 16 categorical salary comparisons.
Finally, the government of Hungary has passed civil partnership legislation for same-sex couples. The law goes into effect in January of 2009. It will allow gay and lesbian couples to register their relationships and to recognize partners as next of kin.
