Equally Speaking

The following is a transcript of HRC’s morning news webcast "Equally Speaking."  To view the current videos visit the main Equally Speaking page.

Good morning, and thanks for tuning in to Equally Speaking, your morning dose of GLBT news from the Human Rights Campaign for Monday, June 9th. I'm Cuc Vu.

And I'm Tommy Lodge...First up, HRC announces its support for a presidential nominee:

The Human Rights Campaign announced Friday its support for Barack Obama in his bid for the presidency as the Democratic nominee. The decision was made based on the Illinois Senator's record of commitment to GLBT equality and civil rights.

Reverend Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop united in a private civil union over the weekend. Robinson and partner Mark Andrew united Saturday in New Hampshire despite protest from a group of religious conservatives. The union was performed five years to the day after New Hampshire Episocopalians elected Robinson as their bishop.

Virginia's highest court ruled Friday that the state must enforce a Vermont court order awarding child visitation rights to the former partner of the child's biological mother. Janet Jenkins is now granted visitation rights after a lengthy legal battle between she and former partner Lisa Miller emerged following the dissolution of a civil union the pair obtained in Vermont in 2000.

A new study proves intervention programs for HIV-positive African American and Hispanic males with a history of sexual abuse are successful in preventing high-risk behavior and reducing depression rates. The study by UCLA's Center for Culture, Trauma, and Mental Health Disparities found that success is in large part due to continued reinforcement after initial interventions and the social support system sustained within the preventative programs.

The same-sex partners of workers in the civil service in Nevada may soon be granted health and insurance benefits. The board of the Nevada Public Employees Benefits Program voted last week to expand its health and insurance coverage to unmarried couples and their dependents. The plan will be submitted to Governor Jim Gibbons for the 2009 through 2011 budget.

Some California marriage clerks are expected to start issuing marriage licenses as early as 5:01 p.m. on June 16th, the evening before marriage for gay and lesbian couples in the state begins. Bakersfield Clerk Ann Barnett will not be one of them, saying her office will cease issuing licenses on June 13th because her staff will be unable to handle the increase in licenses and ceremonies.

That's the news from us today. Thanks for tuning in to Equally Speaking.

Thanks for watching, and we'll see you back here again tomorrow morning.
