LGBT Equality at Law Firms and the AmLaw 200
The AmLaw 200, the top-grossing and most profitable corporate firms in the United States, have made significant strides in advancing equal protections and benefits for their lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees. As with Fortune 500 employers, the more successful the firm, the more likely the firm is to have these protections and benefits in place.
AmLaw 200
- the majority (79 percent) prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation,
- the majority (56 percent) prohibit discrimination based on gender identity,
- the majority (77 percent) provide domestic partner health insurance benefits to their employees,
- a growing percentage (8 percent) provide transgender-inclusive health insurance benefits to employees and depenents (compared to 4% in 2008).
Corporate Equality Index
Law firms have self-selected to participate in the Corporate Equality Index since 2002. AmLaw 100 firms were invited in 2006, and AmLaw 200 firms have been invited since 2007.
The Corporate Equality Index 2010 rated 127 law firms. Eighty-eight earned the top rating of 100 percent, compared to 64 the previous year.
