GLBT Equality at Law Firms and the AmLaw 200
The AmLaw 200, the top-grossing and most profitable corporate firms in the United States, have made significant strides in advancing equal protections and benefits for their gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees. As with Fortune 500 employers, the more successful the firm, the more likely the firm is to have these protections and benefits in place.
93 law firms were rated in the 2008 Corporate Equality Index. Thirty firms earned the top rating of 100 percent, compared to just 12 the previous year, and 80 law firms earned ratings of 80 percent or above. This analysis covers 93 law firms and includes surveys from The American Lawyer’s 200 highest grossing law firms.
AmLaw 200
- the majority (nearly 75 percent) prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation,
- a quarter (25 percent) prohibit discrimination based on gender identity, and
- the majority (more than 70 percent) provide domestic partner health insurance benefits to their employees.
AmLaw 10
The higher a firm ranks on AmLaw’s list of the most successful firms, the more likely it is to provide comprehensive protections and benefits to GLBT employees. Among AmLaw’s 10 most profitable corporate firms:
- nine (90 percent) prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation,
- five (50 percent) prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and
- eight (80 percent) provide partner health benefits.
