California S.B. 777
Summary: This bill would prohibit instruction or activity or the use of any instructional materials in public schools (or in some cases private schools receiving state financial assistance) that reflects adversely upon any persons because of their sexual orientation or actual or perceived gender. The bill also prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or actual or perceived gender in any program or activity conducted by a school that receives state financial assistance.
Status: Bill was introduced February 23, 2007. It was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 8, 2007. On April 17, 2007, it was passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 3-2 vote. On May 10, 2007, the bill was read for a third time, amended, and went back to second reading. On May 24, 2007, the bill passed the Senate by a 23-13 vote.
On June 4, 2007, the bill was referred to the Assembly Committees on the Judiciary and on Education. On June 26, 2007, the bill passed the Judiciary Committee by a 7-3 vote. On July 11, 2007, the bill passed the Education Committee by a 7-3 vote. On September 11, 2007, the Assembly voted 43-32 to pass the bill, and the Senate 21-15 to concur in the Assembly amendments. The bill was sent to the Governor.
