How Many LGBT Parents Have Adopted?
While information is limited with respect to bisexual and transgender parents, a 2007 study by the Williams Institute and Urban Institute shows lesbian and gay parents are raising approximately 65,500 adopted children and youth in the U.S., accounting for more than 4 percent of all adopted children.The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute issued a report in October 2003 that found that 60 percent of the country’s adoption agencies accept applications from same-sex couples. The study further showed that 40 percent of U.S. agencies have already placed children in homes with same-sex parents.
In a report analyzing 2000 Census data, HRC’s Family project and the Urban Institute also found that same-sex parents are 1.7 percent more likely to have adopted than all other households.
