How Many Gay and Lesbian Parents Have Adopted?
There is no official count. But the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute issued a report in October 2003 that found that 60 percent of the country’s adoption agencies accept applications from same-sex couples. The study further showed that 40 percent of U.S. agencies have already placed children in homes with gay or lesbian parents. In a report analyzing 2000 Census data, HRC’s Family project and the Urban Institute also found that same-sex parents are 1.7 percent more likely to have adopted than all other households.
