Introduction

Two Dads and Their SonIn recent years, there has been a sharp increase in state legislation that would prohibit or restrict the ability of GLBT people to adopt children or to serve as foster parents. The sponsors of these bills disregard of the social science research and professional opinion on GLBT parenting. Moreover, these measures could potentially deny thousands of children awaiting foster care placement or adoption the opportunity to find a home and a loving family. Fortunately, none of the bills proposed since 2005 have passed, but the future holds  more challenges.

Learn about the HRC Foundation Family Project's All Children – All Families initiative which is committed to finding permanent families for children by promoting fairness for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender foster and adoptive parents. Adoption

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender parents have some of the most planned for children in the world. Our babies, after all, are never (or rarely) begotten by whim, accident or even a conscious decision to skip the birth control.

Custody

One of the most frightening things a parent can face is the possibility of losing custody of a child. But for gay and lesbian parents, custody disputes can be an especially great concern.

Donor Insemination

When a woman thinks about having a child, she naturally expects that she will be the one bearing the child. But if she has fallen in love with another woman, she may have to think twice.

Foster Parenting

Every night in America, nearly half a million children go to bed in foster care. They have been removed from homes broken by death, divorce, drugs, alcohol, physical or sexual abuse, illness or financial hardship.

Schools & Youth

Some schools have taken concrete steps to demonstrate their commitment to GLBT inclusiveness. Learn more about evaluating schools, school safety and how children experience prejudice.

Surrogacy

In recent decades, a growing number of individuals and couples have turned to surrogacy as a successful way to bring a child into their lives.
