Summary: This bill would make commission of a crime because of the victim’s actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity, as well as other characteristics, and aggravating circumstances that may be considered in sentencing. The bill would also allow for civil actions and would require training for law enforcement officers.

Status: The House bill was introduced January 9, 2008 and referred to the Rules Committee. The Senate bill was introduced on January 10, 2008 and referred to the Judiciary Committee. Hearings are scheduled for January 24, 2008.
