Hype '08

What is Hype '08

On Historically Black College and University campuses across the United States, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students face harassment and discrimination everyday without any recourse. Without the federal protections against hate-crimes, unfair treatment in housing, refusal of medical treatment, and employment discrimination these students are likely to face similar hurdles after they graduate.

Hype ’08 is a Human Rights Campaign national event done in partnership with HBCU student leaders at over 10 campuses across the United States. The HRC together with HBCU student leaders are working to educate and engage the students, faculty and staff of HBCUs and their surrounding communities. By linking national and campus-wide issues such as hate-crimes, anti-GLBT harassment and discrimination, HIV/AIDS and coming out, we hope to bring these issues to the forefront during this important election year.

Howard University Hosts Hype ‘08 Kick-Off Event

HRC and the Bisexual Lesbian and Gay Organization of Students at Howard (BLAGOSAH) will host a bipartisan forum on issues facing the LGBT community. Speakers will include Jeff Marootian, vice president for political affairs at National Stonewall Democrats; Jasper Hendricks, director of field operations and political Programs at the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC); and Chris Scalise, President of the Washington D.C. Chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans. This is the first time a bipartisan event specifically geared towards LGBT students will take place on an HBCU campus.
