HRC Story


The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 3 million members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.

Major Gifts Program Internship

HRC's Major Gifts (also known as the Federal Club Council) program is responsible for identifying, recruiting and stewarding donors who give $5,000 and above annually to the HRC. The Major Gifts program has more than 1,000 members, whose annual pledges help to fund the work of the HRC Foundation, which includes our Workplace Project, Family Project, Religion & Faith Program and Youth & Campus Outreach Program. The Major Gifts team works to make sure these committed individuals have a strong and lasting relationship with the HRC. The Major Gifts Intern reports to the Major Gifts Coordinator, and will be an essential role within the entire team.


  • Handling the acknowledgement process, including preparing, assembling and mailing acknowledgement and welcome packages

  • Periodically updating the content of donor communications to reflect new developments in the work of the Foundation

  • Maintaining the database, including creating and updating records and performing data integrity checks

  • Identifying and researching prospective new donors

  • Other assistance as necessary

  • Fall interns will assist with the logistics of the Major Donor events at the National Dinner

  • Winter/ Spring Interns will assist with the logistic of the Major Donor Leadership summit


  • Professional and responsible demeanor

  • Strong writing and communication skills

  • Interest in learning the details of Major Gifts fundraising

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Database experience is a plus

  • Demonstrated interest in LGBTQ issues


  • Gain an excellent overview of Major Gifts fundraising

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the functioning of a large non-profit through first-hand interactions and collaboration with members of various departments

  • Observe how a Development & Membership department uses varied income streams to meet a multi-million dollar budget

  • Understand how fundraising finances the political and educational work of a large LGBTQ rights organization

  • Learn how issues in the LGBTQ community are messaged to high level donors


  • This is an unpaid internship. School credit is available upon request

  • This internship is based out of our office in Washington, D.C. Internships are also available in HRC’s Project One America offices in Little Rock, Ark., Jackson, Miss., and Birmingham, Ala. We cannot provide housing for our interns
