The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 3 million members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.

Consumer Marketing Internship

The Consumer Marketing Department at the Human Rights Campaign is responsible for the branding of the organization through merchandise. This internship focuses on Retail Operations and Consumer Marketing, offering an opportunity to learn the techniques and strategies used in merchandise outreach for a large non-profit organization.


The Consumer Marketing Department internship entails assisting in the promotion of HRC merchandise as well as the creative freedom to develop and pitch personal ideas. Responsibilities will entail a mix of administration and substantive work experience, including:

  • Social media marketing
  • Coordinating merchandise promotions
  • General research duties
  • Responding to internal and external requests for information
  • Developing external collaborations
  • Creating press packets and other materials
  • Other administrative duties as needed
  • Celebrity and influential media outreach



  • Majors in marketing, public relations, fashion or related fields preferred
  • General computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Familiarity with multiple social media platforms (Instagram, Pinterest, Vine, YouTube, etc.)
  • Experience with graphic design, photography, HTML and/or multimedia a plus
  • Demonstrated interest in LGBTQ issues
  • Team player who is willing to pitch in and help out a definite plus — creativity welcome!


  • Gain hands-on experience in non-profit retail operation & consumer marketing work
  • Expand understanding of issues and laws affecting the LGBTQ community
  • Gain a better understanding of the political process of a non-profit


  • This is an unpaid internship. School credit is available upon request
  • The majority of internships are based out of our offices in Washington, D.C. Internships are also available in HRC’s Project One America offices in Little Rock, Ark., Jackson, Miss., and Birmingham, Ala. We cannot provide housing for our interns
