Equality Candidate

Al Franken MN-Sen

As a comedian, writer and radio talk show host, Al Franken (D) has always been outspoken, and his support of LGBT issues has been no exception. Franken backs pro-equality positions for key legislation such as increased HIV/AIDS funding, fair employment laws, and the repeal of the military’s discriminatory policy. Franken opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment, which his opponent, Sen. Norm Coleman (R ), backed in 2004 and 2006. The Senate race in Minnesota is expected to be highly competitive, especially since the state will be a battleground for the presidential election. Coleman won with just 49.5% of the vote when he ran in 2002; Franken has a very good chance to take this seat but needs financial support to get his message out.

What’s Happening

Get involved—key U.S. Senate race and House races in Minnesota

Minnesota has a key U.S. Senate race and three priority U.S. House races this year. We expect the new Congress will take up important legislation in 2009 that has the potential to provide ground-breaking federal legal protections for LGBT people. Sending pro-equality representatives to Washington, D.C. is more important than ever.

The Human Rights Campaign is stepping up its efforts in Minnesota! In January 2008, HRC field staff worked with OutFront Minnesota to conduct presidential caucus trainings.

HRC contributed to the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party to allow the group to hire an HRC field organizing consultant to do LGBT outreach for the Party. The consultant continues to work for HRC to mobilize HRC members for critical state and federal elections.

HRC conducted a Camp Equality election skills training in Minneapolis in September, attracting 15 participants. We deployed a Campaign College participant and will deploy three staff members to work on key congressional races in the final weeks ahead of the election.
