What’s Happening

Anti-marriage equality amendment would write discrimination into the state Constitution.

We are just a few seats away from a fair-minded majority in the state House — help us elect legislators who will reject divisive anti-LGBT tactics.

In 2006, Arizona voters were the first in the nation to defeat at the polls a proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage and other relationships. HRC supported Arizona Together's successful efforts to defeat the amendment. Opponents of equality are back, and have succeeded in putting an anti-marriage amendment on the ballot in November 2008. We are working hard to defeat this dangerous measure, which would write discrimination into the state Constitution. Your help fighting Proposition 102 is crucial.

We’re just a few seats away from electing a fair-minded majority to the Arizona House of Representatives, and this fall we hope to pick up those seats and have a Legislature that stops spending its time on divisive anti-LGBT legislation.

There are four priority U.S. House races and we need your help here as well. We expect the new Congress will take up important legislation in 2009 that has the potential to provide ground-breaking federal legal protections for LGBT people. Sending pro-equality representatives to Washington, D.C., is more important than ever.

The Human Rights Campaign is stepping up its efforts in Arizona! HRC conducted a Camp Equality election skills training in Phoenix to train and mobilize supporters of equality to volunteer in critical election campaigns. We are contributing to Arizona Together’s fight against the anti-marriage constitutional amendment.

We have deployed a Campaign College participant to work on a congressional campaign, and will send two staff members to work on congressional races and to fight the marriage amendment in the final weeks before the election.

A third staff member has been working with America Votes, coordinating progressive groups’ efforts to mobilize and turn out fair-minded voters.
