Election Night Blog

I am working in the strongly Republican and wealthy district in Scottsdale, Arizona, and have been here since 6 a.m. The turnout here is historically one of the highest in the state. Lines at the polling places have been non-stop since 6 a.m.

I befriended two volunteers handing out literature for the statewide smoking ban and against a second initiative supported by big tobacco that would basically repeal current smoking bans in cities with them. An heir of RJ Reynolds and his wife came by, and they are sick of big tobacco's work and are working for the smoking ban initiative. He said to me, "I fully support traditional marriage, but I oppose Proposition 107. It goes too far. Keep up your great work."

One of the smoking ban volunteers has a son who died of AIDS, and the other one is a flight attendant and has a lot of close gay friends. We're working the polls together to ban smoking and nothing else here in Arizona.
