Cost
Washington, D.C. is one of the nation's
most expensive and underbuilt real estate markets. Height
restrictions on buildings limit the stock of office space
within close proximity to the White House, Capitol Hill and
public transportation. The amount of rent necessary to house
an organization as large as HRC can easily exceed the cost
of acquiring and maintaining a permanent home. At the same
time, the economics of ownership, and the potential to lease
unused expansion space to compatible tenants, is in the best
long-term financial interests of HRC and its donors. This
project will save HRC millions of dollars, freeing up funds
to expand and enhance our programmatic work.
An analysis shows purchasing our own building
rather than leasing would save the organization approximately
$15 million over 15 years.
