Darren Young made history yesterday as the first openly gay active professional wrestler of the Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. after coming out in an interview with TMZ.

TMZ stopped the star at LAX airport to ask him whether a gay man could be successful in the WWE.

Young chuckles and nonchalantly responds, “Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and, to be honest with you, I’m gay.”

The 33-year-old said he hopes to pave the way for others struggling with their own coming out process.

“I’m hoping to be able to make a difference,” he told TMZ. “It’s very important to me that people understand that someone’s sexual preference doesn’t really matter. It’s about the person.”

Fellow WWE superstar John Cena and Executive Vice President Stephanie McMahon have since congratulated Young for taking such a brave step.
