With the days of the Spring legislative session quickly coming to a close, volunteers in Illinois continue to meet every night to connect supportive voters with their representative. Every day since February 1, hundreds of Illinoisans have given their time to attend a coalition phonebank. Just last night, over a dozen students at Northwestern University spent two hours activating people in prioritized districts. And for the past two weeks, nearly two dozen staff at Groupon’s Headquarters in downtown Chicago have done the same.
Our highly sophisticated dialing system makes it easy for you to connect with likely supporters of marriage equality and connect them to their legislator to tell them why a yes vote is important. Our experienced Field Organizers will provide the training you need, the support you’ll want, and the kudos you deserve while making calls. All you have to do is give two or more hours of your time to an upcoming phone bank.
The stakes at this point could not be higher. After progressing this far towards marriage for all loving couples in the Land of Lincoln, there is only one hurdle remaining – and that’s a full House floor vote. If the legislature adjourns on May 31 without voting it will be months, and possibly years, before Illinois sees the freedom to marry granted to same-sex couples. You can change that by volunteering.
I’ve been on the ground in Illinois since mid-January helping lead the field effort of the Illinois Unites for Marriage coalition. I’ve seen the incredible fifteen-member field team at work and I’ve met awesome volunteers at our activities across the state. I know the work HRC is doing in partnership with our friends at Equality Illinois, Lambda Legal, Freedom to Marry and the ACLU is vitally important in impacting the final outcome of this legislation. And I also know that we aren’t there yet.
We must have more people on the phones, more voices speaking to legislators and more conversations with our neighbors in order to push this over the finish line. I hope you can make it to a phone bank soon!
