Earlier this week, Lewisburg, West Virginia, added sexual orientation and gender identity to the city’s non-discrimination law. The addition prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment and public accommodations.

After a five hour hearing, the Lewisburg City Council voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance.  Approximately 500 people attended the hearing, arguing both for and against the revision.

Two West Virginia cities rated in the 2015 Municipal Equality Index (MEI)—Charleston and Huntington—prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations.

West Virginia is one of 32 states lacking explicit, fully-inclusive non-discrimination protections in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Last year, HRC announced support of the Equality Act, comprehensive federal LGBT non-discrimination legislation. The Equality Act would provide basic protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, access to public spaces, housing, education, jury service, credit and federal funding.
