Anti-LGBT protesters shouted “Kill the gays” and threw objects at pride revelers as Montenegrins gathered in the coastal town of Budva to celebrate the country’s first pride parade.

About 200 protesters reportedly threw rocks, bottles and other objects at LGBT activists, who responded to their assailants with shouts of “Kiss the gays.”

The hostile environment for LGBT people and allies in Montenegro has quashed previous attempts to organize pride events in the country.

The U.S. embassy released a statement condemning the violence.

"The United States will continue to work with our partners in Montenegro to combat abuses against the LGBT community and to ensure that all people in Montenegro are treated equally, regardless of sexual orientation," the statement said.

Montenegro is currently attempting to join the European Union, and must demonstrate to the other 28 nations that it respects human rights.
